By 11 a.m. Saturday, 6-year-old Kaylee Munson had landed the biggest catfish (22 inches long) and her 9-year-old brother, Dylan, had taken the biggest bass (17 inches) caught so far during the rain-delayed annual Missouri Free Fishing Weekend Kids Fishing Derby at the Litton Agri-Science Center northwest of Chillicothe. They had also taken several other nice fish including a 19-inch catfish.
An early morning thunderstorm reduced the number of young participants to fewer than 20 this year, but the fish were really biting once the rain stopped and the anglers had already taken several nice sunfish, bass and catfish with two hours left in the event.
All youngsters attending received a lunch and door prizes plus trophies for the largest fish, courtesy of Kids Day sponsors Chillicothe Optimist Club, the Missouri Department of Conservation, and the Chillicothe Oddfellows and Rebekahs. The event was targeted for children ages 15 and under, and MDC had recently stocked additional catfish and hybrid sunfish in the pond to increase success rates for the young anglers.
